Hi! I'm Miral and I'm a pre-med senior in the Anthropology department concentrating on the Medical track. My junior spring (2024), I studied abroad with IES Abroad in Granada, Spain on the Advanced Language program, meaning all classes were taught in Spanish. In this time, I was able to practice cultural humility, stimulate my academic and linguistic background, and experience the worlds and cultures I have studied for so long behind a desk. A city like Granada that does not have too many English speakers (compared to Barcelona or Madrid) nourished me with consistent language immersion and mental agility practice I received anywhere from a Hispano-musulman architectural tour with my class to a churreria in Plaza Bib-Rambla. In my time at IES and UGR (the local university), I fulfilled an LA requirement and an ANT major cognate as well as other electives in sustainability, nutrition, and Spanish language and culture (including local dialect). IES Granada also took us on several trips throughout the semester to other Spanish cities as well as different places in Morocco. This semester allowed me to meet many incredible international and Spanish students from a variety of interests and backgrounds. Being along the Mediterranean also helped me observe more closely the non-profit initiatives and cultural climate of the migrant crisis which is a particular field of interest for my independent work. If you are even remotely considering going abroad for a term or a summer, I can't recommend enough to talk with an adviser and start your search.
