This past summer, I was an editorial intern at India's leading English-language, longform monthly magazine, and one of the few remaining publications in the country willing to independently hold the government accountable; The Caravan has previously covered Modi before he became Prime Minister, Indian army war crimes in Kashmir, Muslim lynchings in northern India, and other topics in a way few other newspapers or magazines are still willing or able to in India's increasingly hostile media climate. As part of the editorial department, I was responsible for helping to pitch, write, fact-check, and edit the coverage that the magazine publishes.
Apart from pitching and writing my own stories — which include an article about China-India relations in the aftermath of the pandemic, and an investigation into the process by which Indian workers are sent to Israel — I helped edit articles in the monthly production cycle.
Outside of work, I visited Mumbai and Kolkata. Additionally, I attended the wedding (shaadi) of a coworker's sister, and participated in Indian Independence Day festivities.
