As a senior the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA), I have always been passionate about immersing myself in new cultures, exploring international perspectives, and engaging in real-world discussions. During my Junior Spring, I studied abroad at the University of Cape Town, South Africa to participate in the SPIA Policy Task Force. This research opportunity is directly connected to the SPIA Junior Paper, and our cohort of students examined social protection policy in both South Africa and Botswana. For Spring Break, Professor Jeremy Seekings from UCT took us on a Princeton-funded roadtrip around Botswana, where we conducted field work, connected with locals, and went on game drives. Within South Africa, I traveled with friends to Kruger National Park and drove the iconic Garden Route. I strongly encourage anyone considering going abroad to seize the opportunity. Stepping outside of the Princeton bubble exposes you to new ways of thinking and expands your worldview. My time in Cape Town even inspired my thesis research, which now focuses on South Africa. You also learn so much about yourself and get to create communities with people around the world. I came back to Princeton refreshed and reenergized, and I would do study abroad again in a heartbeat. On campus, I am in the Black Arts Dance Company, the Princeton Filipino Community, and I serve as a UMatter Senior Engagement Specialist, a Carl A. Fields Fellow, a ProCES Student Advisory board member, and a dance coach with Trenton Youth Dancers.
