As a Streicker Fellow, I interned with Dr. Sinisa Savic’s research group at St. James’ University Hospital. Dr. Savic is a practicing doctor and a professor at the University of Leeds School of Medicine. My project focused on detecting mutations in patient samples with VEXAS syndrome. I assisted in analyzing blood and other biological samples from his patients to conduct clinical research on autoinflammatory diseases. Additionally, I supported the main postdoctoral researcher in studying the differentiation and drug response of THP1 monocytic cell lines. I learned to work with these cell lines and conducted various experiments to advance the lab’s research goals. My weekdays involved running experiments, planning my project with my supervisor, attending seminars, and attending weekly lab meetings. On the weekends, I spent my time traveling across the UK, and got the chance to visit places like London, York, and Cambridge!
