Dean's Fund for Summer Study Abroad

About the Dean's Fund

The Dean's Fund for Summer Study Abroad (made available in the university-wide funding engine, SAFE) offers awards to students on financial aid who enroll in structured academic study abroad and language programs (domestic or international) lasting at least four weeks.

Funding is available both for the Princeton-own faculty-led summer programs (called the “Dean's Fund for International Faculty-Led programs”), and for non-Princeton summer programs (called the “Dean's Fund for Summer Study Abroad and Language Learning”). There are separate funding opportunities for the two types of programs, so make sure you apply for the correct opportunity in SAFE, or the processing of your application will be delayed.

Before starting an application, please note some important Dean’s Fund preliminary restrictions (but more details can be found in the actual SAFE application):

  • The Dean’s Fund does not award funding for internships, both Princeton-own and external (i.e., iXperience).
  • Students who are seeking funding for Princeton in Beijing (PIB) or Princeton in Ishikawa (PII) should not apply to the Dean’s Fund. The Office of International Programs provides funds directly to these programs for students who are accepted on the programs.
  • Likewise, students applying for the PIIRS Global Seminars should NOT apply to the Dean's Fund, as PIIRS has its own funding model.
  • Students applying for the Dean's Fund should be reminded that full approval to participate will be contingent upon the program continuing to meet the requirements for "permissible international travel" laid out by the University, which can be reviewed on the Permitted Travel Policy page.
  • Students who are also seeking credit for their summer non-Princeton opportunity should make sure to start an application in the Global Programs System (GPS) as well. Awarding of funding does not automatically mean awarding of credit (and vice-versa). Princeton-own summer courses do not require pre-approval of credit.

If you have questions about whether you are eligible for funding from the Dean's Fund, please e-mail the Study Abroad Program.

Application Instructions

Review of applications begins after the application deadline. Applicants will be informed of the decision regarding their application based on the timeline below.

Please read the application guidelines in SAFE before submitting your application. Completing a Dean's Fund Application involves the following steps:

  • Complete the online application through the Student Activities Funding Engine (SAFE).
    • All students must:
      • Upload a PDF of your electronic academic record from TigerHub
      • Complete all application questions in SAFE (including additional ones that must be uploaded as a PDF if applicable).
  • If you are applying to a non-Princeton program, the following items are also required:
    • Upload a PDF copy of the program information if you are applying to a non-Princeton program, including:
      • Course descriptions of the classes you're taking, detailing how many classes (if more than one)/credit equivalencies
      • The published, itemized costs of the program. Please note: You must submit official program materials that break down the cost of tuition from the overall program fee, room and board, etc. If the costs of the program are not itemized, please follow up with the program to obtain the cost breakdown.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Even if you do not have an acceptance decision from the program to which you are applying by the Dean's Fund deadline, you should still submit an application to the Dean's Fund ASAP and try to meet the earliest Dean's Fund cycle available. If you are awarded funding and have not been accepted or will not be attending the program of application we ask that you please withdraw your application to the Dean’s Fund in a timely manner, so that the funds can be used for another applicant.

If you have any problems with the SAFE online application, please e-mail the Study Abroad Program.
