First-year students, sophomores, and juniors can apply for an international internship. ALL majors are welcome. Please see internship listings for internship-specific requirements.
Students who are currently on a Leave of Absence are eligible to apply to IIP, but must show proof of full-time enrollment for fall 2021.
If you deferred your IIP for summer 2020, an IIP adviser will reach out to you before the application opens to confirm your interest in your previous placement and provide you with further instructions. Please note that although the IIP office will give preference to the deferral students, there is no guarantee that in-country internships will be available.
As a senior, you will have graduated by the time the internship takes place in the summer. You must confirm that you are an active, enrolled student for the duration of the internship in order to apply
If you are interested in applying for an IIP, review the How to Apply page for more details. All applications must be submitted in Princeton’s Global Programs System (GPS).
For up-to-date deadline and application information, please review the How to Apply page.
Students are encouraged to explore internships on our website and attend an IIP information session in October before starting your application.
IIP administers the Streicker International Fellows Program, which was established in early 2015 by John H. Streicker ’64 to provide undergraduate students the opportunity to carry out substantive internships, research or service projects while immersed in a foreign culture. Streicker Fellows design their own internships in conjunction with a hosting organization, in any academic or professional area, and in any geographic region outside of the United States. For more information, visit the Create your Own Internship section of our website.
IIP conducts a holistic review of each application to match with an appropriate employer. IIP shares the student’s application materials based on the student’s qualifications and internship requirements. Students will be contacted directly by the internship supervisor for a phone / virtual interview. Decisions from employers are received on a rolling basis. The IIP office will aim to finalize all placements by mid-March. More details can be found on the IIP Timeline page.
Absolutely. The Center for Career Development offers a resume guide, workshops, and virtual drop-in hours for resume review. You may also want to speak with students who have already returned from an IIP experience for advice.
Cover letters should be approximately one-page, single-spaced, and tailored to the specific organization to which you are applying. Your cover letter should include the following:
You should obtain a copy of your unofficial transcript from TigerHub. First year students can use their transcript without the final grades for the term.
IIP requires information for two references. In in most cases, IIP simply requires their contact information. However, some internships require a letter of recommendation. Please be sure you double-check your GPS application for all required materials.
One reference should be an academic contact, while the other can be a work supervisor, coach, mentor, or high school teacher. Consider who you may want to ask to be your references and let them know beforehand that they should expect a call/email.
Once you have attached your PDF document only (no Word documents, please) into GPS, you cannot update the information. You must e-mail the latest version to the IIP team.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your application is correct before submission. However, if the deadline has not yet passed, please contact the IIP team.
Please visit our GPS help site or email our office for assistance.
It is your responsibility to submit your application by the deadline. If you believe you have extenuating circumstances, please contact the IIP team as soon as possible to be considered.
