You may already identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer, or you may still be exploring your identity. As you consider going abroad, you may find that the social climate, laws, and norms for personal interactions in other cultures are often different from those in the United States or your home country. It is important to talk to other LGBTQIA+ students who have been to your host country and research the general laws and attitudes of your host country.

Questions to ask yourself

  • What are the laws regarding homosexuality and gender identity in my host country?
  • Is it safe for me to be open about my sexual orientation and/or my gender identity when I'm abroad?
  • Am I comfortable and/or prepared to answer questions about my sexual orientation and/or my gender identity that may come up during my program?
  • Will I need any special housing accommodations while abroad?
  • Will I need medications while abroad and are those medications legal/accessible in my host country?
